    NYD Youth Rugby Tournament

    01 Jan 2020

Our year started with the 53rd staging of the New Year’s Day Youth Rugby Tournament here at the Club.

On 1st January 1967 a Hong Kong Schoolboys side challenged a team of returning boarding school pupils, captained by Brian Forsgate, son of Gerry, after whom our main stand is named.

Now this highlight of the youth rugby calendar in Hong Kong includes games at under 14, 16 and 19 age grades, for boys and girls.

The weather was perfect, the stands busy and, after a few beers perhaps, noisy, and we were treated to six games of rugby.

As is traditional, the boys’ U19s Hong Kong v Overseas Barbarians was our final game, and by my reckoning we had 12 Hong Kong Football Club boys on the pitch; pretty impressive.

In fact, all the games were entertaining, most were closely fought and the standard was high.

If you haven’t been before, make a date to come down to the 54th instalment, it’ll be good.

    Rob Carmichael, Tournament Director
