Gelje Sherpa
is one of Nepal’s most famous and accomplished active Sherpas with 35 8,000m summits to his name. He is also a renowned high-altitude rescuer with more than 40 rescues under his belt.
Gelje tells of how he was born and raised in a village in the Everest region, Solukhumbu. He began his career as a teenager, installing route markers on Everest, one of the world’s most dangerous jobs. After just 5 years, Gelje was recruited as a guide for 8,000m peaks.
The great mountaineer Nimsdai Purja saw something special in Gelje and recruited him to be part of his climbing team, a group of Nepal’s five best Sherpas. Gelje summited nine 8,000m peaks with Nimsdai and is featured in the famous documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible”. Now Gelje is the youngest person to have summited all 14 of the 8,000m peaks, many multiple times. And put Nepal in the limelight as having the world’s best climbers.
Adriana Brownlee
spent three and a half years living and climbing in the high Himalayas, becoming the youngest woman in history to summit all 14 of the world's 8,000m peaks.
In this talk, she takes audiences from the very beginning, through to the moment that childhood ambition became a mission on the slopes of K2 in winter, where she met her partner and climbing companion Gelje Sherpa.
She tells of the 14 peaks, told with honesty, humour and no shortage of near misses. From an oxygen crisis on Dhaulagiri to the tension of Nanga Parbat and a rescue on Annapurna, Adriana reveals what it really takes to survive where most people can't, and the trust, friendship and teamwork that kept her alive.
Out of the mountains came AGA Adventures, the expedition company she founded with Gelje Sherpa, now guiding others safely to the world's highest summits. Funny, raw and deeply human, she talks of chasing something bigger than yourself.
